About College
George College (Department of Education) is housed in an airy and spacious campus in the Mollargate area of Maheshtala on Budge Budge Trunk Road in the Southern fringes of Kolkata. The College campus spans a total built-up area of 3008.467 Sq.mts and 3200.78 Sq.mts of land area, housing main and annex buildings, considered to be an integral part in housing the teacherâs education course. While the main campus is a three storied building, the annexe is a two storied one.
It is run and managed by George College of Management and Science, a registered trust formed under the auspices of the George Telegraph Group. The group, a leading name in India for more than nine decades, dedicates itself in 'Building Careers' for the nationâs youth by way of imparting training to more than 20000 students in a year through numerous vocational, technical training programs and university degree programs, at affordable rates with the sole objective to give them a career.
The main campus houses 6 class rooms each with seating capacities of more than 50 students , 2 tutorial rooms along with a seminar hall of size 188.93 Sq.mts. located in the first floor apart from a another multipurpose hall with carpet area of 296.31Sq.mts located at the ground floor of the main building. Moreover, the main building also have a separate Directorâs room, Principalâs room, Staff and faculty rooms, each with separate wash-rooms. The building has adequate toilet rooms for staffs and students.
The Annex building houses separate Administrative office, Conference room in the ground floor as well as a students' Common room in the first floor.
Laboratories for Demonstrative Trainings
For practical classes / demonstrative training in education, George College (Department of Education) has spacious, well-equipped laboratories / resource-centers for imparting practical trainings. Ten laboratories / resource-centres, with a purpose to build demonstrative teaching skills of the students have been set up. There are labs for Education technology, Information & Communication technology, Maths lab, Physics & Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Psychology, Language apart from a Cultural Resource centre, Art & Craft Resource centre along with a Health & Physical Education Resource Centre, Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW).
Education Technology Lab.
The college has well equipped Technology lab with slide projector, overhead projector, LCD, Television, geometrical figures, models, charts, maps, transparencies, slides, white board, etc. of standard quality. Technology lab is to be utilized for all the lecturers of B.Ed Students. The lab will enable students to get acquainted with knowledge, uses, working and operation of various technology & aids apart from preparing transparencies, PowerPoint presentations, charts, models in their teaching subjects. Teachers can also make use of various aids for the teaching purpose & giving demonstration lessons to make the learning of various topics interesting and effective.
Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Lab.
To keep pace with developments in teaching-learning methods with the help of computer / internet, George College (Department of Education) has equipped its ICT lab with around 100 computers packed with relevant software e.g. for usage of the students and enabling them to access updated knowledge and practice with World Wide Web and for enhancing and practising computation skills.
Mathematics Lab.
The main aim of teaching mathematics is to develop power of abstract thinking and reasoning. It helps in developing the habit of verification in the students. They accept mathematical truths only after confirming their validity practically. To enable harvest these aspects, the lab contains number kit, place value pockets, magic lantern, film strip projector, epidiascope, pictures, geometrical instruments, calculating machine etc.
Physics and Chemistry Lab.
The College has its own well equipped and furnished Physics, Chemistry laboratory for providing the students ample opportunities to conduct experiments with scientific knowledge & principles. The laboratory is equipped with most advanced instruments and lab tools such as Plain Mirror, Thermometer, Ammeter. Electro Magnet, Bar Magnet 3D, Convex Mirror, Resistance Box, Rheostat, Stop Watch, , Test tubes, spectrometer, electric balance, and chemical balance, etc. Thus, students shall get practice of using various equipments and accessories effectively before they go for teaching practice.
Biology Lab.
The campus boast of an exclusive Biology laboratory where opportunities exists for preparation and examination of microscopic slides, preservation of specimens, demonstration of experiments, exploration of physiological process, development of teaching models, dissection work, etc.
Geography Lab.
The college also has a well-equipped Geography laboratory having tracing tables, raised maps, surveying instruments, survey of India Toposheets, wall maps, weather maps, charts, models, weather instruments, computer sets with internet facility etc.
Psychology Lab.
The psychology lab of the college is provided with apparatus for simple experiments related to educational psychology such as intelligence test, creativity test, attitude test, aptitude test etc. There are also CDs related to these tests. The Psychology laboratory fulfills the purpose of equipping the student teachers with the knowledge of the tools and equipments used for assessing the psychological traits and further the skill of using the equipments and drawing inferences from the results.
Library
The library is a store house of text books, reference books and both national and international journal comprising of around more than 2526 Titles and more than 4539 books.
The college has e-Library system. The college intends to provide book bank facility for every student. The stock of books and periodicals are regularly updated to empower our students and teachers in their research works.
Cultural Resource Centre
The campus' cultural resource centers are open to any student to educate, support and celebrate different Indian traditions while fostering leadership and service aimed towards all communities.
Art and Craft Resource Centre
A well equipped art & craft resource centre is established in college because canvas is the made to express the inner feelings of students. All the possible facilities & opportunities are extended to our students to engrave their minds & creativity.
Health & Physical Education Resource Centre
The College possesses a fully equipped Health and Physical Education Resource Centre and a well prepared vast green grassy Playground. The resource centre is equipped with items like Carom Boards, Carom Powder, Chess Set, Stop Watch, Measuring Tape, Flag (House Flag), Ground Flags, Weighing Machine, Badminton Rackets, Badminton Shuttle Cocks, Badminton Net, Badminton Polls, Foot Balls, Volley Ball, Hand Ball, Skipping Rope, Whistles, Clipper Starter, Ludo, Parade Drum, Anatomy Charts, Yoga Charts, Balanced Diet Charts, Teaching Models related with Physical Education, etc. Students will also be encourage by the George Telegraph Sports Club.
Socially Useful Productive Work
Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW) is a subject in Indian schools where students can choose from a number of vocational education activities embroidery and knitting, gardening, cooking, painting, carpentry and other crafts and hobbies, and clubbed community service for senior students (class IX onwards). Students learn to work as a team and to work with skill and deftness.
In addition to developing individual skills, SUPW aims to help develop among the students the habit to work as a community, encourage community thinking, increase awareness of scientific advancements and develop a scientific outlook. The training acquired in the classroom is expected to help students to solve day-to-day problems of the community
