Optometry is an independent profession in eye care. Its practice includes a complete examination of the visual system for the estimation of refractive errors.It also covers the manufacturing, supply and fitting of spectacles, contact lenses and other optical aids. The day-to-day activities of an optometrist comprise Case Histories, Refraction, Testing the Front and Back of the Eye, Colour Vision, Eye Pressure etc.
An optometrist can also conduct special clinics on Contact Lens, Paediatric and Public Health Optometry.
Some subjects that are taught in M.Optm course are Applied Optometric Optics, Advanced ophthalmic diagnostic procedures & instrumentation, Epidemiology and Community optometry , Research Methodology & Biostatistics, Business aspects in optometry, Applied clinical optometry , Advanced contact lens practice, Geriatric optometry & Low vision rehabilitation, Ocular diseases & Therapeutics, Paediatric Optometry and binocular Vision, Recent advances in Optometry, Occupational optometry etc.
On successful completion of the course you will be a primary health care professional, institutionally educated and clinically trained in the science of optometry. You can independently practice the profession or seek employment in an optometry clinic, optical establishment, with an ophthalmic surgeon or in an eye hospital. Employment opportunities are also open in various multinational companies in their divisions such as Marketing, R&D etc. You will also be able to teach in a school/college of optometry, pursue higher education or take up further research in the ophthalmic field. .
Master’s Degree in Optometry is a 2-year, full-time post graduation course. The course is divided into 4 semesters. There is also sufficient emphasis on field projects for building practical experience.
Any student who has passed Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry is eligible for admission.
